You will work under the supervision of doctors and nurses as you perform important tasks related to the treatment of patients. You will also be an important member of the office management team.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growth of 23% in the employment of medical assistants from 2014 to 2024. Medical assistants work directly with doctors and nurses, taking patients’ personal information, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, performing basic laboratory tests and X-rays, drawing blood and much more. You will be fully prepared to work in the following facilities:

As a medical assistant you will perform a great number of patient-related tasks, so you will need the right set of skills to do an exceptional job. Summit College faculty will train you in these skills through classroom instruction, externship and clinical hours. Tasks include:

  • Greeting and directing patients
  • Updating and maintaining electronic medical records
  • Appointment scheduling and maintaining schedule books
  • Insurance verification
  • Processing insurance claim forms
  • Laboratory services
  • Recording patients’ medical histories
  • Assisting physicians during examinations
  • Taking patients’ heart rate and blood pressure



Our Medical Assistant Clinical & Administrative program is designed to emphasize both front-office administrative skills and back-office clinical skills. The administrative portion of the program focuses on abilities such as dealing with insurance companies and medical billing. The clinical portion focuses on preparing students to work in a clinical environment, dealing with anatomy and CPR, and other clinical procedures.
