Summit College’s IV Therapy program is specifically tailored as a continuing education course to provide further training for licensed vocational nurses. This program equips students with a detailed training in intravenous (IV) therapy and blood withdrawal that will help them provide distinguished patient care.
IV therapy training and certification will give licensed vocational nurses an upper hand in the healthcare field, and the Summit College program provides quality education and hands-on training in the short period of two weekends. During this time, our highly trained faculty will help you master IV fluid administration and blood withdrawals. The staff at Summit believes in helping all students in achieving their full potential and their career goals.
At the end of the IV Therapy program you will be prepared to gracefully perform venipuncture for both IV fluid administration and blood withdrawal.

The more knowledge and specialties you have, the better your chances of getting a job. An IV therapy certification can give you a strong upper hand for a career in patient care.
You will be trained to work in the following facilities:

You will have a large and important role in patient care, so it’s essential to learn and perfect the right skills to perform an excellent job. Things you may be able to do as a result of your new certification include, but are not limited to:
- Identify signs and symptoms of fluid volume excess or fluid volume deficiency
- Troubleshoot intravenous infusions
- Identify proper tubing for use
- Discuss unexpected outcomes related to a peripheral intravenous infusion and other related interventions
- Describe steps for insertion of a peripheral IV device
- Identify types of prepared IV solutions
- Determine the best tourniquets to use
- Blood withdrawals
Our well-rounded IV Therapy program provides students with a compact but important set of classes divided into lectures, audiovisual classes, and lab and clinical hours that will equip them with a set of skills necessary to thrive in a healthcare career. Students will also learn to use critical thinking skills required in a variety of difficult venipuncture settings.

The goal of the IV Therapy program is to equip licensed vocational nurses with an expertise that will help them provide safe and effective care of patients.
For completion of the program, students must attend instructional lectures, pass the written examination and perform at least three supervised venipunctures and three supervised skin punctures on live subjects. To qualify for the program, students must submit required documentation to the IV Therapy instructor, including a Licensed Vocational Nurse license.
