Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a crucial member of the healthcare team. In this position you will assist patients with health needs under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. While working as a CNA, you will engage in a variety of tasks in a span of different settings. As a certified nursing assistant, you will work directly with nurses and patients and be responsible for a number of care-related tasks. You will be trained and able to work in the following facilities:
- Medical clinics
- Rehabilitation centers

- In-home medical support services
- Adult day care

You will have a large and important role in patient care. For that reason, learning the right skills to do an excellent job is non-negotiable. At Summit College, you will get the instruction you need, thanks to experienced faculty, academic support, modern facilities and a blend of classroom and hands-on experience with clinical and externship hours.
As a certified nursing assistant, you will perform a number of different clinical tasks. Your duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Personal patient care, including bathing, dressing and feeding patients
- Helping to mobilize patients
- Helping patients get daily exercise
- Answering patient calls for help
- Taking vital signs
- Monitoring patient behavior and physical condition
Our Certified Nursing Assistant program introduces you to a range of subjects that will help you provide exceptional assistance to patients. Our curriculum was tailored to prepare students for successful careers in healthcare. While enrolled in Summit College’s CNA program, a student can expect to learn how to communicate with patients, principles of effective care, patient safety and how to handle medical equipment. Students will also learn to use critical thinking skills required in a variety of healthcare settings.

The major goal of the CNA program is to help future nursing assistants develop and understand the principles of safe and effective care of residents in long-term care, and also to equip students with the skills for entry-level positions in the nursing career.
Upon completion of the CNA program, students will be eligible to sit for the Nursing Assistant Exam.
